3 chicks in this picture????

Eagle watching can be more than educational.
You sometimes find a picture that makes you
think one thing but the truth is actually another.

Yes there was only 2 eggs laid and 2 hatched.
No they didn't put another chick in the nest.
This is just one of those pictures you see and
just can't help saving as "funny things you see".

FEETIES

Yeah my feet turned yellow. Did yours too?

PARENTS CONTINUE TO FEED

Parents will continue to feed these chicks even when
they turn into eaglets and fledge at about 12 wks. old.
Even then while the eaglets are trying to learn to
catch fish on their own the parents will still feed them.

WARMTH

Here you see the 2 chicks huddling together to keep warm.

TWO CHICKS

You will see there is a dark spot in one of the eggs. That is the chick using

its tooth to cut through egg shell.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR JUST BEFORE EGG-LAYING

Just wanted to mention-WHAT TO LOOK FOR JUST BEFORE EGG-LAYING:
Female sitting down on nest more and more. Female reluctant to leave the nest area. She sleeps in nest all night. Male may bring fish for her to eat.
EGG-LAYING: Female's feathers stick out like a porcupine. Her body starts contractions, every two or three seconds. She opens her beak a quarter inch and emits grunts with each contraction. This may last for 3 or 4 minutes. When egg comes out she stands over it allowing it to dry. After this you will see a lot of eagle raising up over the egg/eggs and turning the eggs.
Which will continue from day 1 of laying egg until 35-40 days of incubation till hatch if egg
is fertile.

3/01/09 taken at 11:25:00AM EST I sent picture to Lisa she said: Definitely a hole.
This is the 37th day of incubation.
The hole in the shell allows the chick to breath.
It can take up to 24 hrs. for the chick to come fully out of the egg.
Tired and wet it will dry very fast.
